Still I Wonder

Gerald Brennan—composer, lyricist, pianist, singer

This is a waltz-time reverie about lost love.
Guy’s caught in a bind — he’s dreaming obsessively of his wife who left him long ago, but the longing is alloyed by another feeling : what if she actually returned to him?
He’s set in his ways now, and her reappearance would not mean unconditional welcome. She hurt him too deeply and he isn’t sure he could ever forgive her. Does he really want to live that way?
But the thing that really sticks in his craw is this: he’s as clueless about why she ever left him as he is about how he ever scored a woman like her in the first place!

Nights by the fire
thinking of you,
still I wonder if your heart was true.
Then I retire,
dream the night through
fleeting visions of the love we knew.

Where did you go?
Where are you now?
I won your love but still I wonder how.
Long years ago,
love gone awry,
I lost your love and still I wonder why.

Your love lost.
Still I wonder…
what would I do
if you returned,
would I take you back again
or would I

live out our days
silent and sad,
blaming you for all the pain I’ve had?

Where did you go?
Where are you now?
I won your love but still I wonder how.
Long years ago,
love gone awry,
I lost your love and still I wonder why.

Still I wonder
why.
